A gravel driveway can last a long time and stay smooth, or it can turn into ruts, potholes and mud in one wet spring. The difference is almost never the top layer of stone. It’s the digging, the base and the drainage underneath.
Garrett Excavating builds gravel driveways start to finish for homeowners in Milford, Loveland, Clermont County and the Greater Cincinnati area. We’re an excavating company, so the ground work that matters most is what we do every day. We own the equipment, we do the work ourselves, and we build driveways to hold up to Ohio clay and freeze-thaw.
New gravel driveways. We stake the route, strip the topsoil and sod, dig to firm ground, shape the grade, and build the stone up in compacted layers. You get a driveway that’s built, not just a load of stone spread on the grass.
Rebuilding and regrading worn driveways. If your driveway has ruts, potholes, washouts or a dip that holds water, adding more stone on top usually doesn’t last. We regrade it, restore the crown, fix the soft spots, and add base and top stone where it’s needed.
Long rural driveways. Long driveways on acreage come with their own problems: hills, low spots, runoff crossing the drive, and room for trucks to turn around. We handle long runs, pull-offs and turnarounds, and parking pads for equipment, campers or trailers.
Culverts and ditches. Where your driveway crosses a roadside ditch or a drainage path, a culvert pipe keeps water moving under the drive instead of over it. We install and replace culverts and cut or clean out ditches along the drive. Driveway entrances off a public road often need a permit and may have culvert size requirements from the county, township or city. We’ll help you figure out who to call before we start.
A good gravel driveway uses different stone for different layers. Here’s what we commonly use around here:
Which stone, how many layers, and how deep all depend on your soil, the slope, and what’s driving on it. A car-only driveway on firm ground needs a lot less than one carrying concrete trucks or farm equipment. We’ll recommend the right layers and depths after we look at your site.
A lot of ground around Clermont County and Cincinnati is heavy clay. When it’s wet, stone pushes down into it and mud pumps up, and a year later your new stone is gone. On soft or wet ground we lay geotextile fabric over the subgrade before the stone goes down. The fabric keeps the stone and the clay separate, so your stone stays where you paid to put it.
Water is what ruins a gravel driveway. Every good gravel driveway has:
Every gravel driveway needs some upkeep, but a well-built one needs a lot less. A few tips:
When a driveway is past patching, we can come back to regrade, rebuild the crown and top-dress it.
1. Walk the site. We look at the route, the soil, the slope and where the water goes, and we talk through how you’ll use the driveway.
2. Make a plan. You get a clear scope: the layout, the stone, fabric if needed, culverts or ditches, and a timeline.
3. Build it. We excavate, place fabric where needed, build and compact the stone in layers, set the crown, and leave you with a driveway that drains.
A gravel driveway built on a solid base can also serve as the base for concrete or asphalt down the road. We don’t pour concrete or lay asphalt, but we can prep the base for your paving or concrete contractor. See our Driveway & Sidewalk Base Prep page.
How long does it take to put in a gravel driveway? It depends on length, soil and whether culverts are involved. Once we’ve seen the site, we’ll give you a timeline.
What’s the best stone for a gravel driveway? Usually a larger base stone, like #2 or #4 on soft ground, with #304 or crusher run on top. #57 looks clean but works best over a compacted base, not by itself.
Do I need a culvert? If your driveway crosses a ditch or a drainage path, almost certainly. Your county, township or city may require one, and may set the size, at the road.
Can you fix my existing gravel driveway instead of replacing it? Often, yes. Regrading, restoring the crown, fixing soft spots and top-dressing can bring a worn driveway back.
Do you serve my area? We work throughout Milford, Loveland, Clermont County and the Greater Cincinnati area.
